30-days-greenWow, it’s been two weeks already.  Time is just flying in general!  I’m still going at it and am actually still enjoying the challenge.  As i have been reading up on green smoothies I learned that it is a good idea to switch up your greens to keep your body from getting too used to one kind of green and because different greens produce different detox so this week I used Kale instead of baby spinach.  Kale has stronger flavor which means it can be tasted so the smoothie will be a taste a little leafier. It took a day or so to get used to but once your taste buds adjust I actually began to like them just the same as if I had used baby spinach.  In addition to last weeks benefits, here are some new ones for this week:

  • I lost another 3 or 4 lbs.  That is a total of 8lbs in 2 weeks.  I really believe that much of the weight that was lost was built up waste.  So long junk!!!
  • My sugar craving are still being kept at bay.  Every once in a while I will get a craving for ice cream or chocolate but my brain seems to be automatically responding with a reminder of what I used to feel like after I ate those things, which was not good.
  • My emotions seem to be more balanced.  I didn’t experience this the first week but this week I have noticed it.  I’m more balanced and steady emotionally.  Things don’t seem to bother me as much and I’m much more able to handle stressful moments, such as Judah being overly fussy and clingy or responding better when my hubby and I disagree on something.
  • I also have an increased energy reserve.  I started training for some upcoming running races which uses a lot of energy and I need more sleep when I run.  But seeing how I have a little boy who wakes frequently throughout the night, I am not getting as much sleep as I think I need.  Surprisingly, considering those two things I am making it throughout the day without a nap…ready for bed at night but not utterly exhausted

Green Smoothies are pretty powerful drinks and can make a huge difference in daily life.  For those of you drinking green, what have you noticed?

a_wfood_2_0831I’m on day 9 of the Green Smoothie Challenge and I have seen some really great results so far.  Today, for some reason, food was calling out to me!  I was out and about for most of the day and even though I started my day off with a yummy smoothie, it seemed that the smell of fast food was being carried by the wind directly to my nose.  As I would go from my car to the stores the scents of Wendy’s (which I never liked) and Chick Fil A smelled so good.  I didn’t cave in to the smells though, no matter what my nose was telling my brain. 🙂

I came across this article and was reminded why I am doing what I am doing.  The food may smell good, look good and fill you up but does not do the job of nourishing the body.  It was just the kind of reminder I needed to hear today, especially after having the #1 from Chick Fil A calling my name.

Enjoy the read!!!

30-days-greenI have successfully finished my first week of the Green Smoothie Challenge!!!  I am rather proud to be able to say that this week really has been successful for me.  Since giving birth to my son eleven months ago I have not eaten well (to my standards) and have attempted to start eating right and working out again numerous times, and have not succeeded.  I would start strong with discipline, will power and desire and would usually only make it through to the second day before I ate something I shouldn’t.  Needless to say, I never felt in control or confident about the choices I was making.

This week has been different!  I didn’t just add a green smoothie to my daily routine, but I am also eating far less meat and dairy and am cutting out processed foods and sugar.  I am also keeping a food journal of the thirty day challenge.  I want to be able to look back and see my eating patterns and learn from them.  According to my past efforts, I should have failed on day one.  I’m happy to say that I have only eaten meat, dairy and sugar at one meal.  I wanted to do this challenge as a catalyst into the kind of lifestyle I want to have and I feel so far that it has been just that.  I really thought it was going to be much harder than it has been and that I was going to be hungry and craving all the time.green_smoothie

Here are a few things that have happened so far…

– My craving for sugar has been curbed, literally.  I used to need something sweet at least once a day and often times more.  Now, I will go an entire day and not crave or even desire anything sugary.  This is a miracle to me.  If I want something sweet, a piece of fruit hits the spot every time.  Even thinking about eating something sugary doesn’t appeal to me as it used to.

– I feel cleaner and lighter.  I had gotten so used to feeling bloated and heavy that I had forgotten what it feels like to feel airy, it’s awesome!  For the first few days my body was being cleansed; I’ll spare the details but it was obvious. 🙂

– At meals I feel satisfied on less and lighter fare.  Instead of feeling full, stuffed or regretful of what I ate, I can leave a meal actually feeling nourished not just fed.

– I lost a few pounds.  I hadn’t been able to hurdle the plateau that I have been stuck at for many many months.  I don’t know if it was water weight (bloating) or just having been cleaned out a bit, but it feels great to be able to wear some of the clothes that have been hanging in my closet untouched since before I got pregnant nearly 2 years ago.

Overall, my first week of the challenge has been rewarding and not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be.  I’m ready to start week number 2 and am armed with positive results, fruit and lots of greens!!!

green_smoothieToday is the start of the 30 Day Green Smoothie Challenge over at Happy Foody.  I wrote a few posts back about the challenge and will be keeping track of my challenge on here.  I’ll most likely write at least one post a week about the challenge.  I’ll be sharing some recipes, my ups and downs, thoughts and progress!

I’ve been asked why I am doing the challenge in the first place.  I know for me it’s a step in the direction that I want to head with my health and life.  Here are some of my goals:

-Cleanse my system and give it a rest from foods that cause it work harder than it should to break down and digest

-Get rid of a sweet tooth that I haven’t been able to shake by making sure that I am getting the necessary nutrients everyday

-Loose around 5-10lbs. that hung around after Judah was born

-Feel cleaner, lighter and more energetic every day

-Develop eating habits that are truly beneficial for my body.  It’s easy to tell yourself something is healthy and then actually believe it.  I want to eat lots and lots more living foods.  I am a living being and I know that live foods are vital to the health of me.

I am committing to drinking 160z. of a green smoothie a day, cutting out refined sugars, eating a green leafy salad everyday, cutting down on my meat and dairy intake.  I’ll let you know if I turn a shade of green too! 🙂

30-days-greenI am really wanting to make some changes to our eating habits.  Most people think I eat really healthy as it is, but I know what I eat and how I feel and how foods effect me.  I have to listen to my body and do what is right for it.  I know that I am responsible to take care of my body and provide it with the right fuel so that it can function optimally.  I want to be proactive in my health.  I want to not battle with my weight because I eat foods that are just not good for me.  I want my immune system to be fully supported and strong.  I want to have self control and be master of my body and not the other way around.  I want to feel strong, clean, energetic and light.  I want to raise my son to love live foods.

So, I’m joining in with Sara over at Happy Foody in a 30 day Green Smoothie Challenge.  I have done smoothies in the past but have never done green smoothies, but I’m up for the challenge and want to make this a permanent addition in my daily routine.

Here’s what she has to say…green_smoothie

Adding a green smoothie to your day is the BEST thing you can do to get on the path to a healthier you. When you drink a big green smoothie in the morning, it fills your body’s need for those vital nutrients to function throughout the day. You will slowly STOP CRAVING junk food. It’s like magic!

We will begin on August 17 and end on September 17. Here is what you are committing to:

  • Drink at least 16 oz. of green smoothie per day (a quart would be even better!)
  • Do some sort of activity every day. This could be an intense workout, or just dancing with your kids around the living room. It could be a 15 minute yoga session or a walk around the block.
  • Add a green leafy salad to your lunch or supper (with light dressing…stay away from the creamier sauces).
  • Stop drinking pop.
  • Cut out all white sugar.

I am actually going to start this week so I can start coming up with smoothies that I like.  I’ll post the tried and tested recipes later.  Green Smoothies here I come…
